R.A.T. Your Rodent Around-the-World Traveler (a.k.a. Raz)

Hi, My name is R.A.T., which stands for Rodent Around-the-World Traveler (I like to think it stands for Rodent Adventure Traveler), but everyone here calls me Raz for short. I would love to share my adventures with you. I left my rat family in early January to seek adventure. Everyone said "head west young rat," so that is what I did. I headed west to San Diego, California where I ran out of land and had to hop on a ship to continue my journey. It turns out that the ship I found was going west around the world--a dream come true! The MV Explorer is home to the famous Semester at Sea study abroad program. My shipmates include 629 college students and about 150 faculty, staff, lifelong learners, and family members. Things are really busy here on the ship and even busier when we are in port. Come follow me vicariously as I take this incredible journey. Yours, R.A.T.

P.S. I had such a great time on the voyage that the adventure continues!!!!

Veitnam - Saigon - More Lions!

Here I am in our next stop--Saigon (a.k.a. Ho Chi Minh City). I'm standing right in front of the big cathedral.
Across the street was this wonderful neoclassical post office.

Inside the post office. There's a painting of Ho Chi Minh on the back wall.

Another area of the post office with an old map of the area.
Scary lion!

Here's another lion.

Another lion. I think this one wants to play.
This one at the entrance to the zoo seemed much friendlier.

Hong Kong - Ferrys and Lions

Here I am relaxing a bit in the Guilin airport on way to Hong Kong.

Some of my student friends in the airport. They had been really starved for WiFi as there is very limited Internet on the ship.

Made it back home to the MV Explorer in Hong Kong.

Here I am taking the ferry to downtown Hong Kong.

Departing the ferry.

This is a favorite ritzy hotel for weddings!

A bunny wedding couple on the front of a car!

We came across some lions ready to celebrate Chinese New Years in a Hong Kong park.

A strange looking lion.

One of the regal lions at the HSBC Building.

This lion wasn't so tough. See she was playing with one of her cubs. Okay, so going in her mouth maybe wasn't such a great idea.

What was even scarier was coming across this poster!!!

To calm my nerves we went to McDonalds for a Coke.
Here I am with one of my younger ship friends waiting to get back on board.

China - Guilin Boating, Biking & KFC!

We made it to beautiful Guilin. Here I am at a little temple on top of a hill. I iked the circular openings. They remind me of an exercise wheel!

A little bit of Western culture right next to our hotel in Yangshuo. The Chinese love KFC.
We took a boat trip down the Li River to see the karsts.
There were a lot of them!

Here are some tourist from China. They like to pose for pictures.

Our boat was bigger than this one.

Back on solid ground we went to visit the inside of a karst.
This is what we found inside. Pretty!

We then went on a bike/hike trip. Since they did not have a bicycle my size, I ended up riding in the basket.

This is where we rode to. We then had to hike up that big hill to the half moon opening.

We made it!

Time for a break on the bus to village.

China - Beijing & Shanghai

Here I am at the Forbidden City! It's huge!
Here I am in Beijing with one of the students on the ship. They were a lot of fun!

Walking the wall--the Great Wall that is!

Our next stop was Shanghai. Across the river from the ship in the area they call Pudong were lots of tall skyscrapers!

When you are up close to them they really do seem to scrape the sky. Boy do I feel small!

At the top of the World Financial Center. Now I feel really, really, tall!

After we descended from the top of the skyscraper we found cows waiting for us.
This cow gave me a ride (along with his little blue friends).
There were also a lot of big blue guys all over Shanghai. His name is Haibao and welcomed people from all over the world to China in 2010 for the World Exp. He was very friendly!

Here he is again.

We then visited the Chinese Pavilion from Expo 2010. It is now an art museum.

Here's another view of the massive building.
I also found these friends as well. Here is Mr. Bull.

And here is Mr. Bear.
