R.A.T. Your Rodent Around-the-World Traveler (a.k.a. Raz)

Hi, My name is R.A.T., which stands for Rodent Around-the-World Traveler (I like to think it stands for Rodent Adventure Traveler), but everyone here calls me Raz for short. I would love to share my adventures with you. I left my rat family in early January to seek adventure. Everyone said "head west young rat," so that is what I did. I headed west to San Diego, California where I ran out of land and had to hop on a ship to continue my journey. It turns out that the ship I found was going west around the world--a dream come true! The MV Explorer is home to the famous Semester at Sea study abroad program. My shipmates include 629 college students and about 150 faculty, staff, lifelong learners, and family members. Things are really busy here on the ship and even busier when we are in port. Come follow me vicariously as I take this incredible journey. Yours, R.A.T.

P.S. I had such a great time on the voyage that the adventure continues!!!!

Chicago - Michigan Avenue

Found it! The start of Historic Route 66! Right at Michigan Avenue.
There were a variety of ways to explore Michigan Avenue. Just like the Mustang--the bicycles were too big. Hate it when I can't reach the pedals.

There was also the big Bus--too fast!
I decided walking was best. Look at the wall of buildings that face Grant Park.

The building with portals at the top floor is the Santa Fe Building, the home to the Chicago Architectural Foundation.

There is a big model of the city in the atrium.
Here are some of the books on Chicago in their shop. I really like the red one with the golden building on the cover!

Next stop was a few doors down for lunch at the Cliff Dwellers Club (get it--the wall of buildings on Michigan Avenue is like a cliff!).
Have a great view of Millennium Park. The silver Bean looks very small from here. See everyone playing in the water of the Crown Fountain?
Another View.
The building next door has lots of lion heads on it!
Back at ground level I found a bit of Paris! One of Hector Guimard's Metro station entrances.

I also found this powerful and grand Native American on a horse. Next stop the Auditorium Theater!
Adler & Sullivan's Auditorium Theater--What a Building!

The Grand Staircase.

Great Ornament!

More ornament!

Cool Column!

Chicago - Cool Wheels!!!

Beautiful Saturday morning for a ride in a pony!

I'm ready to go!
See there is the pony!
Belted in and ready to go--but one problem--can't reach the wheel.
Okay, now I can steer, but can't reach the pedals.
This looks like a better option--no pedals or steering wheel.
I met Tony at the gate and he offered me a ride on his coaster wagon!
Wheeeeeeee!

Chicago - More FLW, etc.!

I walked around Oak Park and saw more of the work of Frank Lloyd Wright. This bust of him is kind of creepy!
Here is Wright's Frank Thomas House. I like the arched entrance and the art glass windows.
The Heurtley House down the street also has a big arch entrance.
Here is the Beachy House. I would call it Griffinesque. It burned in a dramatic fire back in the early 1990s, but was restored.
This is the Nathan Moore House. Wright claimed that he designed it with its historic Tudor character to make the client (but not the architect) happy because he needed money as his kids needed new shoes!
Here is the Mrs. Thomas Gale House with its cantilevered porch--pre-Fallingwater!
I then went to the south side of Chicago to visit Hyde Park and Wright's famous Robie House. It reminds me of a huge ship!
The house has beautiful art glass windows!
Down the street is Wright's earlier Heller House with its dancing girl freeze!
Nearby is a religious building by Barry Byrne who had worked in Wright's office.
I like its zig-zag entrance!

Hyde Park was President Obama’s Chicago neighborhood. Notice all of the bumper stickers on this car.
Nearby was the Powhatan, a neat Art Deco building. I like the color mosaics on it.

Chicago - Oak Park & FLW!

Had a great couple of days in Chicago checking out some interesting architecture.

First stop—Oak Park! This is the art modern Oak Park Post Office, designed by Charles White.

Oak Park was the home of architect Frank Lloyd Wright. I like the strong geometrical forms in his architecture, like the big triangular gable with square shingles, the rectangular windows topped by a semicircular window, the diamond panes of glass, and the round planters.
Here I am in FLW's playroom. Cool mural of the Genie and the Fisherman!

Along the side of the house is Wright’s architecture studio where he designed many prairie houses. Although it is built of brick and shingles like the home, the studio looks very different. It has two big octagonal forms (drafting room to the left and the library to the right—behind me) that are connected by a low entrance behind a wall
Here is a closer look at the entrance to the studio.

I asked the storks what the architecture plan was of that they were standing next to, but they didn’t know.

Across the street from the Post Office was Wright’s Unity Temple building. Right now it is undergoing a major restoration so they have wrapped the building in plastic. It looks like the artist Christo turned the building into one of his masterpieces!

Chicago - Leaning Towers & Lollapalooza!

Yes, it's Chicago--Really! Well, actually, no the campanale is in Niles, but that is just north of Chicago. We didn't get to see the Leaning Tower in Pisa when we were in Italy, so I was able to visit this almost full-size replica on my visit to Chicago.

It was pretty tall (94 feet). I liked the rows of columns and arcades.
Here I am holding it up!

I also had some good chats with a couple of Chicago-Italian lions at the tower.
I then went down to the Loop for an evening of entertainment. The Sky Ride Tap opened in the 1930s and was named after the Skyride the Eiffel Tower of the 1933-34 Chicago World's Fair.
I walked pass this huge mural.

This building had a pretty neat fractured facade.
I then went to Lollapalooza to see Paul McCartney! There were a lot of people there!!!

Sir Paul rocks pretty good for a 73 year old! Here is a clip.
